Most weekends fill up fast. Smithville has plenty to see and do, but this one is meant for slowing down, wandering a little, and enjoying the town at your own pace.

October 2–4 gives you plenty of easy reasons to linger in Smithville, with live music beginning Friday evening, a laid-back Saturday morning at Meet Me at the Depot, a community-wide garage sale, Fall Market Days, local history, shopping and dining, and a Sunday market that makes it easy to stretch the weekend just a little longer.

Here is one way to spend the weekend the Smithville way.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 2 - ARRIVE, SETTLE IN & FIND THE MUSIC

Check In and Put the Car Keys Down for a While

Start by finding your home base for the weekend. Smithville has vacation rentals, cottages, ranch stays, RV options and other places to settle in - including several stays close enough to downtown that you can make the town part of the experience rather than just a stop along the way. Friday Night - Smithville Music Festival

The fifth annual Smithville Music Festival runs Friday and Saturday in downtown Smithville, with the stage on Main Street in the Historic District. The festival is free and family-friendly, with local and regional music, refreshments and plenty of room to bring a chair, find a spot and enjoy the evening.

Published artist schedules already show Friday-evening performances, so plan to arrive with time to eat, wander downtown and settle in before the night gets going. Check the festival Facebook page for the final lineup and set times as the weekend approaches.

Or Take the Spooky Route

If your idea of a fall weekend leans more toward haunted woods than dancing on Main Street, Scream Hollow Wicked Halloween Park is also open Friday night near Smithville. Its October 2 schedule is 7:00 p.m. to midnight, with multiple haunted attractions, a haunted hayride, food, live entertainment and other Halloween experiences. The haunted attractions are recommended for ages 12 and up. It is a ticketed attraction, so check availability before heading out.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3 - MAKE A DAY OF IT

8:00 AM - Start With a Little Treasure Hunting

Smithville's Fall Community-Wide Garage Sale gets an early start at 8:00 a.m. and continues until 3:00 p.m. – City maps of known sale locations can be picked up on the porch of the MKT Depot, 102 NE 1st Street.

The semi-annual garage sale turns Smithville into one big treasure hunt, with sales scattered around town and plenty of opportunities to find a good deal, uncover a hidden gem or discover something you did not know you needed until you saw it.

Early birds can make a few garage-sale stops before 9:00, or save the treasure hunt for later. You have until 3:00 p.m. to explore.

8:00 AM - 4:00 PM - Smithville Fall Market Days

If your treasure hunting leans more toward handmade goods and market finds, head over to Smithville Fall Market Days at the American Legion, 145 American Legion Road. The market runs from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and features more than 70 vendors with vintage finds, handmade goods, local makers, food options and a coffee truck.

The American Legion bar will also be open with beer and wine available. Because Fall Market Days runs into the afternoon, it is easy to work into the day before or after Meet Me at the Depot, Heritage House tours or downtown shopping. Browse a little, grab a bite and keep moving at your own pace.

9:00 AM - Noon - Meet Me at the Depot

From 9:00 a.m. to noon, the Smithville MKT Depot & Railroad Park becomes the gathering place for Meet Me at the Depot.

Pull up a rocking chair and hear local residents share porch stories and railroad memories. Challenge somebody to checkers or dominoes. Visit with the owners of classic cars gathered for the cruise-in. Listen to live music under the gazebo featuring Cody Cotton and Frank Cavitt & Friends. Bring the kids for storytelling, take a trolley ride and grab some iced tea or lemonade available from concessions.

There is no complicated schedule to follow.

That is kind of the point.

They don't make Saturdays like this anymore. We do.

Come for an hour if you would like. Stay all morning if you forget to look at the clock.

10:00 AM - 2:00 PM - Heritage House Open House Tours

While you are already in the heart of town, make time for the Smithville Heritage House & Museum at 602 Main Street. The museum is open on First Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. for open house tours, making it an easy companion stop to Meet Me at the Depot and a chance to spend more time with Smithville's local history.

The house itself dates to 1908 and is part of the Smithville Heritage Society's work to preserve and share local history. Step inside to explore photographs, artifacts, documents and memorabilia that help tell the story of Smithville and the people who shaped it.

Noon and After - Eat, Shop & Wander Downtown

When the noon whistle blows, do not head for the highway just yet.

Downtown Smithville is only a short distance away, with local boutiques, antiques, gifts, art and plenty of places worth wandering into. Browse Smithville shopping and see what catches your eye.

And after a morning of railroad stories, trolley rides, treasure hunting and talking, lunch will probably sound pretty good. Smithville has cafés, barbecue, Mexican food, bakeries, grills, a wine bar, a brewery and other local places to grab lunch, coffee, dessert or a cold drink. This is not the Saturday for eating in the car.

Take the Long Way Around Town

If you want to stretch your legs between stops, make your own tour. Smithville has a self-guided film-location map highlighting places connected to productions filmed here - including the town's well-known ties to Hope Floats - and downtown itself rewards a slow walk past older storefronts, public spaces and bits of local history.

Saturday Evening - Back to Main Street for More Music

The Smithville Music Festival continues Saturday, so after lunch, shopping, history and a little downtime at your lodging, head back downtown for another round of live music. Bring your chair or blanket, find your spot and let Main Street carry the evening.

The nice thing about October 3 is that you really do not have to choose just one thing. Mix it up however you like. Nobody is keeping score.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 4 – Y’ALL DON’T RUSH HOME QUITE YET

Start Slow - Or Start in the Pines

Sleep in a little, find breakfast, or get outside early. Buescher State Park is just northwest of Smithville and opens at 6:00 a.m. The park offers miles of hike-and-bike trails, a small lake for fishing and paddling, quiet pine-oak woods and the scenic Park Road 1C connection toward Bastrop State Park. Day-use reservations are recommended because the park can reach capacity.

10:00 AM - 2:00 PM - Smithville Sunday Market

Then come back toward town for the Smithville Sunday Market at James H. Long Railroad Park. The weekly producers-only farmers market runs Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. September through May and features locally grown farm products, homemade and handmade goods, local artisans and live music.

It is a fitting way to close the loop on the weekend: back at Railroad Park, talking with local growers and makers, picking up something to take home and giving yourself one more reason to walk downtown before you leave.

Still Not Ready to Go?

If Sunday is still feeling too good to cut short, Visit Smithville lists the Mary Nichols Arts Center gallery as open Sundays from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., with local art and rotating exhibits. Explore Arts & Culture for more.

And if you linger into late afternoon, Smithville Brewing Company currently hosts live music every Sunday from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. The brewery is family-friendly, has a full kitchen and non-alcoholic options, and gives weekend travelers one more place to sit awhile before finally pointing the car toward home.

For visitors staying Sunday night - or anyone who did not get enough Halloween on Friday - Scream Hollow is also scheduled to reopen Sunday, October 4 from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m.
